Iraq

So far there have been 34 troops die in Iraq during the month of October. This is nearly the lowest amount of deaths in about two years. About a third of these deaths were from non-combat causes. This is the second significant decrease in deaths. In August 84 troops died, followed by 65 deaths in September. Overall almost 4,000 troops have died in Iraq since the beginning of the war on terrorism. It is great to see these numbers decreasing, but it is still terrible to see these soldiers dying in Iraq. It's too early to be excited about the decrease in numbers, because the war on terrorism is still going on and many soldiers are still losing their lives in Iraq.

World

Mexico has experienced flooding as a result of heavy rains throughout the past week. Tens of thousands of people have fled their homes as a result of this, and one man died. The flooding is not related to the tropical storm Noel. The flood also caused a pipeline to explode, but that did not cause any injuries. President Calderon flew out to some of the areas that needed help, and says that he is trying to help as much as possible. Many people have been effected by this flooding.

Sports

Many Hoosiers are dissapointed today (November 4) as the colts lost tonight's game, their first loss of the season. The final score was 24-20. Tom Brady threw two of his three touch down passes within the last four minutes of the game. For the first half of the game, it seemed as if the Colts had it under control. The colts were missing one of their key players, Marvin Harrison, as a result of his knee injury. He has missed three straight games.

Election

Hillary Clinton spoke on Sunday, November 4 to clarify her position on New York Governor Elliot Spitzer's plan to give drivers license to illegal immigrants. The issue was brought up at the Democrats debate on Tuesday, and Clinton's answer seemed to be unclear. At the time all she said was the plan made a lot of sense to her. On Sunday she was asked about it by reporters, and she said that she wasn't as clear with her answer as she should have been. She also said that she supported what Governors like Spitzer were trying to do. She said that the states had to come up with plans like these as a result of the federal governments failures when it comes to this matter.

Business

Employers added twice as many jobs as expected during the month of October. The Labor Department stated on Friday November 2, that the nation's payrolls grew by $166,000. The nation's unemployment rated stayed at 4.7 percent. Things are looking better than economists expected; they predicted the payrolls to increase by about $80,000. President Bush pointed to the growing employment opportunities to show that his economic policies work, although I don't know that everyone would agree with that. Average hourly earnings raised to $17.58 in October.

Health

It's that time of year again, time for colds and the flu. There are many remedies and traditions to treating these that have been around for years, but there are also many misconceptions about how to treat these illnesses. As always you should keep your hands clean, and wash them frequently. One rumor that is false is that you can sweat out a cold, experts advise people to take it easy working out while you have a cold. Experts advice people not to overdo it with cold remedies and medicines. They sayT to eat what feels good, you don't have to just eat soup. Another interesting fact is that smokers are more likely to get the flu.

Technology

Local

On Saturday November 3, Anderson held a city wide cleanup session. This was held at Anderson's Athletic Park. This is the second year the city has offered this, it is an opportunity for residents to get rid of old tires and household debris. They had over 40 dumpsters there, and many people brought items to get rid of. They also said that if residents had large items such as furniture or appliances, they would arrange for someone to pick them up. The city sponsored this event, and 10 different departments helped out. This is a good way for residents to get rid of things that they couldn't normally just set out with their regular trash. It is held twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall.

State

A student attending Pendleton Heights High School has been diagnosed with MRSA on November 2, 2007. Glenn Nelson, the principal, said that the student transferred to PHHS and believes that the staph infection was brought to the school, not contracted at the school. Nelson did not identify the student, or the student's gender. He said that this is a very low grade of MRSA, and it is only resistant to one antibiotic. He also said that the school was taking precautions such as disenfecting desktops, keyboards, and athletic equiptment. A letter was sent to parents with information about MRSA.
